The Basics of

To calculate the number of subnets in a network, use the formula 2^n, where n is the number of bits used for the subnet mask. For example, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.192 (or /26 in CIDR notation) uses 6 bits for the subnet mask, so the number of subnets is 2^6, or 64.
